At this year’s Valencia Design Week in Spain, not a huge amount of companies convinced us about their products being truly good for our planet, in fact, we noticed a lot of greenwashing going on. However, a few local rug-designing companies stood out for both their commitment to people, planet and profit and their gorgeous designs.

The Spiral Carpet by Nani Marquina

Nani Marquina, whose gorgeous no child labour carpets we featured before (see also the Global Warming rug), presented the Spiral collection for the new season. Designed by Martín Azúa and Gerard Moliné the 100% wool rug is all hand-made and comes in different sizes, and also as headboards for beds and decorating the wall of the bedroom. ::Nani Marquina

NOW Carpets are a Touch Experience

NOW Carpets is a relatively young design company, who, like Nani Marquina, ensure an ethical production (through the program RugMark) with natural materials such as banana fibres, hemp, silk, and wool. This year they launched local designers Francesc Rifé and Jose Albors’ 100 Lines carpets, made with natural fibres such as linen, banana and bamboo, which results in surprisingly different textures that are very pleasant to the eye and the touch. ::NOW Carpets

The third Spanish company whose rugs caught our eye was Gandi Blasco with the colourful knitted Mangas (meaning ‘sleeves’) by Patricia Urquiola who herself exhibited ‘Cosas’ at the Valencia Design Fair. (Top Image)

Gandia Blasco also introduced two new manufacturing techniques to their collection: Hand Turfed and Kilim, both using 100% wool and a manual process. Kilim rugs are also reversible, which increases their lifespan. ::Gandi Blasco
