Tom Hanks Supports Scooter Power at the “Larry Crowne” Premiere
Los Angeles – It was scooter mania on Hollywood Boulevard on Monday, June 27, as Tom Hanks and a posse of his pals rode motor scooters up to the “Larry Crowne” movie premiere at the Mann Chinese Theatre.
Hanks powder-blue ride plays a key role in the new film, in which the two-time Oscar winner stars as a middle-aged guy who loses his job and decides to head back to community college, where he meets a beautiful teacher, played by Julia Roberts. Its a move that changes his life, including a serious downsize from a gas-guzzling SUV to that little blue scooter. Choosing this project actually changed Hanks real life, too, for he not only stars, but also wrote, directed and produced the movie as well.
The last time he tried taking on acting, writing and directing was in 1996, with “That Thing You Do!” and at an earlier press conference for the film, Hanks revealed that “Larry Crowne” has taken him six years to bring to the big screen.
“It really started off with us wanting to reexamine the theme of reinvention, and not just reinvention by way of fate dictating it, but by your own proactive place, in how you move on to whatever the next chapter of your life is going to be,” Hanks said. He and his co-writer, “My Big Fat Greek Wedding” scribe and star Nia Vardalos, spent a lot of time honing the story, which they began before the American economy went into recession.
“It did happen in the real world, and you can make a movie about that in which the best version is going to be a documentary that really examined whats going on,” he said. “The second-best version of that, I think, would be a movie that at the end of the day is extremely depressing and or serious or so hard hitting that it offers up no hope. But we are competing in a marketplace in which a thing that we might have going for us is the true battle against cynicism. Thats what Larry Crowne is about, more than anything else. Thats what were going for, and if you do that well enough, enough people will respond to it.”
The fans assembled on Hollywood Boulevard certainly responded to the double star power of Hanks and Roberts at the premiere, as the two legendary actors signed autographs and posed for photos. Then it was off to the red carpet, where most of Hanks talented and diverse ensemble cast was assembled.
Hanks cast his wife, Rita Wilson, in a small role, as well as Vardalos husband Ian Gomez; they celebrated the romantic comedys premiere along with co-stars Cedric the Entertainer, Taraji P. Henson, Wilmer Valderrama, George Takei, Bryan Cranston, Rob Riggle, Maria Canals-Barrera, Rami Malek, Grace Gummer and Gugu Mbatha-Raw, who is the films breakout star.
