The GreenShows Pop Up at Bloomingdale’s SoHo for Earth Day

With Earth Day just around the corner, there’s bound to be a bevy of green fashion coverage hitting the mainstream media outlets; eco-friendly fashion on Earth Day? How original. But really, putting sarcasm aside, I am excited about green initiatives–literally–popping up at retail locations such as Bloomingdale’s SoHo.

On Wednesday, April 20 through Saturday, April 23, they will host “The GreenShows Spring Ecolux Designer Pop-Up Shop” with ten fashion and accessories designers “in celebration of Earth Day 2011,” according to the press release.

Even if Earth Day is an excuse for a mainstream high-end department store to highlight the work of some of my favorite fashion labels, I don’t mind, it’s a step in the right direction.

Designers showing their spring 2011 collection at the Ecolux Pop-Up include: STUDY NY by Tara St James, Samantha Pleet, Suzanne Rae, The Battalion, H. Fredriksson, Artists and Revolutionaries, Ajna Collection, Robin Brouillette, and accessories collections by The Sway and Sprout.

The pop-up shop will feature local artistic talent as well. Susan Benarcik will design a site specific art installation. Plus, exciting news for window peepers: all three of Bloomingdale’s Broadway street level windows will feature the designers and a one-of-a-kind couture gown by Luis Valenzuela, who I interviewed in September at Fashion Week.

Also at Bloomingdale’s SoHo (504 Broadway, New York, NY 10012) this month, Carrie Parry, who will host a trunk show on the 3rd floor from April 14 – 17, featuring a capsule collection preceding the labels’ fall 2011 debut.

I covered the collection here and I’m impressed by the overall design, which features detachable pieces; sustainable materials, like organic cotton, handwoven silk and recycled jersey; and local manufacturing, made in New York City.
