LA Fashion Week: Popomomo Plays Up Proportions for Fall 2011
Writers Eve Babitz and Patti Smith, circa 1970, served as inspiration for LA-based eco fashion label Popomomo. Designer Lizz Wasserman, who chose an intimate party, hosted at the Mandrake Bar in Culver City, California, to present her fall 2011 collection during L.A. Fashion Week, says “both women offer unique and strong views of feminism, love, sexuality, art and creative ambition.”
Translation: elongated silhouettes, like a high-waisted skirt that can button off, lots of layering pieces, and played up proportions, including an over sized midriff-baring t-shirt. Take a look:
Based in Los Angeles, Popomomo continues to create their entire collection in there. This season they worked with organic cottons for their shirts, tencel for the majority of their dresses, hemp/organic cotton for knits, an organic cotton duck cloth for their jackets, remnant quilt and plaid materials, and a sheer, silky tencel knit, which is knit in Los Angeles, for their layering pieces.

At the LA Fashion Week event, guests rocked to acoustic tunes from Raw Geronimo, a new band lead by frontwoman Laena Geronimo, who also played the role of model and muse to Popomomo designer Lizz Wasserman.
The music, described by Wasserman, as “jungle-punk-soul-surf-goth-world-avant-pop” offers a fitting description for the designer’s own collection, which features edgy cutouts–Wasserman’s signature–while maintaining a west coast cool vibe.
I love the button down skirt that can be worn a variety of ways. It’s chic yet multifunctional and totally wearable for summer, too; the vest, jacket, and short ensemble shows how different pieces can be layered to achieve different looks, this one can be described at Lady Gaga meets school girl; and the dress with its coattails offers a casual and feminine approach to tuxedo attire.
