Cool Clothes: Beat the Heat With Breathable Summer Fabrics
During swamp-like summer weather (read: its hotter than Brad Pitt*), theres nothing worse than traipsing to work wearing stuffy clothes. After all, nothing says stylish like sweat stains in the small of your back.
Luckily, wardrobe stylist Chrissy Volk is here to help, with a cheat-sheet for finding the most breathable fabrics for the season. Hint: Its all about checking tags for the right clothing ingredients.
Tips to Find Breathable Clothes and Fabrics
-
Ditch the Polyester: While pure polyester hasnt been in style since the disco era, a lot of clothes are still made from a polyester blend. Sadly, even a little poly can go a long way in terms of stifling your internal temp. Volk says to ditch the polyester and reach for items made of breathable 100 percent silk instead. Another great option? Chiffon will also keep you cool.
- You Can Still Do Denim: If youre hyperventilating at the thought of stowing away your baby blues, no fear. Volk swears you can still wear denim and stay breezy at the same time. She says the trick is to look for denim with a high cotton content, and small synthetic content; jeans with 98% cotton/2% lycra or 96 % cotton/4% Lycra fabric content offer a good combination of cool and stretch to follow your movements.
- Tee Up the Cotton Clothing: Who doesnt love reaching for a cool cotton t-shirt or sliding into a cotton sundress? Want to make your experience even more comfy? Volk suggests you look for clothing made of the softest cottons of them all Pima and Supima Cotton.

*Kristin suggested I use her as an analogy for hot, but I thought you might appreciate the visual of Mr. Pitt more. Sorry Kristin I still love you and think you are SMOKIN.
